Several years ago when I built and ran several surgery centers, I was fortunate to get some great advice from a mentor about empowering employees. I then developed some of my own employee strategies to make for a more profitable and positive work environment. If you follow these five tips to make your employees love you, you will find that you can improve your company’s retention and productivity rates.

1. Ask for Their Input

No matter how much experience you have in an industry, your employees can help you find innovative opportunities for improvement. Since you have to pay attention to the big picture, you don’t know what they experience day to day.

Make sure your employees know that you want their input. You can do this by maintaining an open-door policy and letting them submit feedback anonymously.

In addition to improving your business, you’ll make employees happy by getting them involved and giving them the chance to feel heard.

2. Give Them Constructive Feedback

When it comes time to evaluate your employees, make sure you give them constructive feedback that helps them do their jobs better. If someone falls short of your expectations, you should tell them how they can improve instead of simply expecting them to make changes on their own.

By giving people constructive feedback, you’ll make them happier and encourage them to excel.

3. Successfully Delegate

Most employees appreciate the opportunity to learn and grow. Delegating responsibilities will help employees greatly, but many managers need to learn delegating skills. Initially, delegating tasks may actually create more work for a manager, but in the long run it can increase productivity. A manager will be able to focus on higher-level strategies and problems.

As Kaplan Mobray, acclaimed leadership coach and motivation expert points out in his article How to Successfully Delegate, “Letting your team members flourish will promote a healthy environment and prompt employees to stick around, but it also reflects well on you, too.” So, take the time to master delegating skills to help employees grow and succeed.

4. Offer Flexible Schedules

Rigid schedules can make it impossible for employees to take care of responsibilities outside of work. When possible, let workers set their own schedules and work from home at least on certain days.

Flexible schedules make it easier for people to raise families, stay healthy and enjoy life. Flexible schedules can also make employees feel that you value their time and choices. In return, many people become more productive because they’re happier and more satisfied. While for many roles, this is not an option, when flexible schedules are possible the returns can be significant, both with morale and productivity.

5. Promote From Within Your Company

Ambitious people don’t want to stay in positions that offer few opportunities for advancement. When you promote from within, you show your staff members that they have futures at your company. Consistently hiring new people to fill management roles sends the opposite message. It doesn’t take long before your best employees become discouraged and start looking for new jobs.

Keeping employees happy benefits them and your business. When your employees feel respected, they will love you for it. Employees will be more likely to enjoy coming to work and doing their jobs well each day.
